The Merrymen are a young band from Oxford whose music is brilliantly defined by a nostalgia for a musical past they never actually lived through. The sounds of the 70s and 80s, and the raw beauty of punk and post punk have given the Merrymen an uncontrollable aspiration to sculpt something similar. What they have created has strong hints of the past, but is inevitably unique and instantly recognisable. Over the past years the Merrymen have written countless songs amongst which gleam a slowly growing number of small, unforgettable gems. The Merrymen are lucky in the sense that technically speaking they are not especially talented musicians, as a result their songs are blessed with a perfect, youthful simplicity with melodies like nursery rhymes and guitar riffs that a six year-old could play. Now their music is recorded in a series of iconic tracks which they will be releasing this summer, and which succeed incredibly in capturing the live spirit of this gloriously shambolic bunch.
